2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison goes big with 35 inch tires

Chevrolet is looking to grow even further with the 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison.

On Wednesday, the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison debuted with larger tires, better breakover and departure angles, and more ground clearance. It also has extra underbody protection in case someone hits a rock while dodging another.

Chevrolet did not comment on pricing or production numbers, but Chevrolet Performance executives said production of the ZR2 Bison will double to meet customer demand.last generation Colorado ZR2 Bison sold out Automakers soon tried to promote production We tried to keep up with demand, but ran into supply chain issues. up to date Colorado ZR2 It runs 33-inch Goodyear Territory Mud Terrain tires, and GM’s engineers said the 35 wouldn’t fit without rubbing.

For Bison, the same engineers cut the fenders and wheel liners and added fender flares to fit 35-inch Goodyear Territory Mud Terrain tires. These 35s are wrapped with AEV-designed 17-inch beadlock-ready wheels. Asked if the 37 would fit, executives at Chevrolet Performance told the Automobile Corporation that “it would require a pretty big modification.”

The AEV vertical tire carrier is mounted on the driver’s side of the cargo bed behind the cab because the spare tire is too large to fit under the cargo bed. This setup makes it easy to grab a spare tire when going off-road, but it also takes up valuable bed space. There is usually an empty space under the bed where the spares are available for the owner to customize or attach things to.

Colorado ZR2 Bison Angles and Suspension

The ZR2 Bison’s 38.2-degree approach angle is just 0.2 degrees worse than the standard ZR2, but the bigger tires give it a 26-degree departure angle (0.7-degree increase) and a 26.9-degree breakover angle (1.9-degree increase). Excellent. Ground clearance is also increased, checking in at 12.2 inches versus the standard ZR2’s 10.7 inches.

Karl Widman, head of Ford Performance, told the auto authority that the 35 might fit in the new Ranger Raptor, but could rub and impede suspension travel.

The ZR2 Bison has the same suspension travel as the standard ZR2, 9.9 inches front and 11.6 inches rear. To maintain these numbers, the suspension was lifted and moved to keep the bounce and rebound travel unimpaired, according to Chevrolet Vehicle Dynamics Performance Engineer Julio Bombacini.

Colorado ZR2 Bison gains AEV protection and upgraded shocks

The ZR2 Bison features five boron steel skid plates that protect the radiator, steering gear, transmission, transfer case, fuel tank and rear differential. Rock sliders protect the body from scratches and dings.

The front and rear bumpers have been replaced with AEV units with cast iron recovery points, and the front is equipped with a winch with a backing plate already installed. That backing plate is responsible for the slight loss of approach angle compared to the standard ZR2.

Colorado ZR2 Bison Gets Launch Control

ZR2 Bison extends ZR2’s Performance Shift Algorithm (PSA) programming by adding launch control.

The truck must be in Baja Mode to run Launch Control. With the brakes applied, when the driver depresses the gas pedal, the 8.0-inch digital gauge his cluster flashes, letting the driver know his controls are ready to launch. After that, the driver only needs to release the brakes and drive off.

Chevrolet has programmed Launch Control to learn the road surface based on the tire’s coefficient of friction. It then modifies and adapts throttle speed to minimize slippage.

Notably, Baja mode works equally well in both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive, so Launch Control works in both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive.

The ZR2 performance shift algorithm has been improved for Bison. Because the upgraded truck can carry more speed with bigger tires and jump control dampers.

The ZR2’s 2.7-liter turbo-four engine makes 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, as does the truck’s eight-speed automatic. No paddle shift yet.

The Bison is an upgrade package for the ZR2, allowing buyers to get a truck with a fabric or leather interior.

The Bison is about 300 pounds heavier than the ZR2, so the maximum payload is reduced by 30 pounds to 1,050 pounds. It is said to be able to tow up to 5,500 pounds, which is 500 pounds less.

Fuel economy ratings will be released closer to launch, but Chevrolet didn’t change the ZR2’s gears for the Bison.

All Bisons come with Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Active Lane Control, and Adaptive Cruise Control as an option.

When the new Colorado ZR2 Bison arrives in the fall, it will be the smallest member of the currently included ZR2 Bison family. silverado 1500 and the sturdy silverado.
