With the release of the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota is looking to keep the smaller midsize Highlander as relevant as possible with some changes. The changes the Toyota has made have seen the Highlander’s price increase by $2,500 for 2024.
For 2024, the Highlander loses the base L trim. Previously, the Highlander L used to start at $38,015. For 2024, the cheapest Highlander is the LE which costs $40,515. While pricing for the 2024 Highlander has gone up by $2,500, when you compare last year’s LE trim to the 2023 Highlander LE, pricing has only gone up by $100 for 2024.
Last year’s Highlander L trim didn’t come with blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert. Shoppers had to upgrade to the LE trim for an extra $2,400 for these features. We assume that Toyota has data that showed the L trim wasn’t all that popular, so it decided to drop the L for 2024.
The only other changes that Toyota has made to the 2024 Highlander include fitting the XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum trims with a standard hands-free power liftgate.
Toyota has also made changes to the 2024 Highlander Hybrid. For 2024, the Bronze Editions of the Hybrid and Hybrid XLE have been dropped. Instead, shoppers will find new Nightshade Editions for the LE and XLE trims.
As its name implies, the Nightshade Edition brings black exterior mirror caps, badges, a grille, a rear spoiler, a shark fin antenna, and 18-inch wheels. The XLE Nightshade also has black roof rails. The Nightshade Editions are available in Cement, Wind Chill Pearl, Midnight Black Metallic, or Ruby Flare Pearl paint colors. The interior of the LE Nightshade comes with black cloth upholstery, while the XLE Nightshade comes with black two-toned synthetic leather upholstery with unique embossed fabric inserts and silver accent stitching.
The 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid starts at $42,115, which is $100 more than last year.
With a starting price tag of $40,515, the 2024 Toyota Highlander gets closer to the Grand Highlander, which starts at $44,465. Compared to other competitors in the class, the Highlander is one of the more expensive midsize SUVs. It costs more than the Subaru Ascent ($35,490), Kia Telluride ($37,355), Kia Sorento ($31,415), Hyundai Palisade ($37,735), Chevrolet Traverse ($35,915), Honda Pilot ($38,465), Volkswagen Atlas ($39,075), and Nissan Pathfinder ($37,145). The Mazda CX-90 is one of the few midsize options that cost more than the Highlander, as it starts at $40,970.
