Hyundai Ecstar Micro SUV Launches in India: From Price to Specs, Here’s Everything You Need to Know

New Delhi, 10th July: Hyundai Motor India entered the entry-level SUV segment in the country on Monday with the launch of its new model ‘Ecstar’ priced from Rs 599 lakh to Rs 9.31 lakh (before showroom). This model, a direct competitor to the Tata Motors Punch, is powered by a 1.2-liter petrol engine and comes in both manual and automatic versions. The 5-speed manual trim with fuel consumption of 19.4km/l is priced between Rs 599,000 and Rs 9,310,000. Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor India, said the model will help bring in more sales while strengthening the company’s overall SUV portfolio.

“Exter is our eighth SUV model in the country, making us the only company currently offering products in six SUV sub-segments,” he added.

He outlined the growth of the SUV segment, which now accounts for 46 percent of all passenger car sales in the country.

The contribution of SUVs to the company’s total sales has risen from 34% in 2019 to 54% today, he added.

“We also demonstrated leadership in three segments: Verna, Crete and Tucson,” Garg said.

In the SUV segment, automakers already sell models such as Venue, Creta, Alcazar, Tucson, Kona Electric and Ioniq 5.

Garg noted that the Exter’s launch could push sales in the entry-level SUV segment to 20,000 to 22,000 units per month.

Tata Punch currently sells about 11,000 per month. Last year’s model sales were 129,895 units, but this year’s January to June sales were 67,117 units.

“Ecstar will bring more new customers to Hyundai and raise benchmarks across the segment,” Garg said.

The Exter comes standard with 391 liters of trunk space, 185 mm of ground clearance, dual camera dashcam, electric sunroof, six airbags and a range of connected features. Tesla has a new rival in China, and three Chinese-based EV makers other than BYD witness a surge in sales.

Regarding the outlook for sales for the rest of the fiscal year, Garg said the chip shortage is more or less resolved and the situation is good. The automaker grew 10.5% in the first half of the year, he said.
