2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Earns Highest-Possible Safety Rating

The 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 becomes the latest electric car to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest-possible safety rating. The IONIQ 5 aced the organization’s crash test, comes with Acceptable-rated headlights, and has a Superior-rated front-crash prevention system. With its high scores, the IONIQ 5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ award.

Ever since it came out in 2022, the IONIQ 5 has earned the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ award, but Hyundai made some changes to the EV to improve its side crash protection. For the 2024 model year, Hyundai reinforced the IONIQ 5’s door sill and B-pillar. These reinforcements helped the electric SUV earn a Good rating in the IIHS’ new version of the side test.

The IONIQ 5 joins a small group of electric vehicles that have earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. Other EVs include the Hyundai IONIQ 6, Genesis Electrified G80, Genesis GV60, Lexus RZ, Subaru Solterra, Volkswagen ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron, Genesis Electrified GV70, Tesla Model Y, Audi Q8 e-tron, Rivian R1T, and Rivian R1S.

At the beginning of the year, the IIHS updates its requirements for vehicles to earn its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings. The organization also made changes to its side crash test that involves 82% more energy than the original test that launched in 2021. Additionally, the IIHS also mandated that vehicles must come with Acceptable- or Good-rated headlights and added a new nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention test. The changes saw the number of vehicles that met the requirements for one of the IIHS’ awards get cut in half as only 48 vehicles qualified for an award in 2023, down from 101 in 2022.
