UK engine production in March increased by 31.7% in 2021 compared to the Covid hit month a year ago.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, said:
Production in March 2020 was severely impacted by the start of a coronavirus pandemic that closed the factory, so these numbers need to be set accordingly. UK engine production is declining in the first quarter and the outlook remains bleak for the foreseeable future. Companies are working tirelessly to maintain cross-border trade, address Covids, and manage global component shortages, especially semiconductor shortages. Therefore, it is important to take steps to support the competitiveness of UK car manufacturing in the coming months.
