Samsung is the latest foldable mobile phone, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3.. You may be wondering how you missed the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 2, but don’t worry. I have not experienced any amnesiac attacks caused by the blockade.
It may be playing fast and loosely by naming convention, but it’s certainly Samsung’s third flip-format smartphone. It’s just the second, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5GWas a repetitive update to the original Galaxy Z Flip released six months ago.
Aside from the tricky nomenclature, how accurately are Samsung’s two recent foldable phones compared? Flip 3 isn’t completely over yet, but here are some early thoughts.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G Price and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be available on August 27, 2021. It will be available in two flavors: 128GB ($ 999 / £ 949 / A $ 1,499) and 256GB ($ 1,049 / £ 999 / $ 1,599). ..
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G was announced on July 22nd and was rolled out on August 7th, just six months after the original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The launch price was $ 1,449 / £ 1,399 / AU $ 2,599.
This is a huge price cut for the Flip family and could ultimately bring Samsung’s smooth folding to the masses. This is probably the most exciting difference between these two phones, which is mostly positive.
The basic design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is very similar to the previous Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G. Folding in half is a more or less full-size smartphone.
I’ve tried the new device and it feels like a small but remarkable evolution in design. Despite the new “Glasstic” back and glass camera module surround, it somehow feels stronger than its predecessor, the all-glass rear.
The dimensions are certainly very similar, but the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is 166 x 72.2 x 6.9 mm next to the Flip 5G’s 167.3 x 73.6 x 7.2 mm, which is slightly smaller in all directions. Nevertheless, the new device actually weighs 183g and 1g.
Based on the time the device was first used, the Flip 3 hinge mechanism appears to be less wobbling, safer and all-round than its predecessor. That feeling is supported by the IPX8 rating. In short, it’s water resistant in a way that Flip5G doesn’t have.
The new device looks better than the second generation Flip. Samsung has significantly refined its design language, reducing its softness and luster and making it more subtle and industrial.
Both phones have a fingerprint sensor mounted on the side, which makes it a bit tricky to access when opened. However, keep in mind that in Flip 3, the creases look a little less noticeable.
Both of these phones feature a foldable 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a very high aspect ratio.
The resolution is similar: 1080 x 2636 for Flip 5G and 1080 x 2640 for Flip 3. These few extra pixels really make no difference in perception.
What makes the difference is the faster refresh rate of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. At 120Hz, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G’s display is literally twice as fluid, fixing one of the biggest complaints about the old foldable.
Another issue addressed is the Galaxy Z Flip 5G’s secondary display. This was a desperately small 1.1-inch Super AMOLED panel located on the outside of the device.
It’s in the same place on the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but it’s 1.9 inches, so it’s much easier to use. The notifications are actually more comfortable to read and look more integrated than before.
Perhaps the biggest weakness of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G was its camera offering. The two discreet 12-megapixel sensors were basically based on the same technology as the 2019 Samsung Galaxy S10e.
The photos it was able to take were great, but the $ 1,449 / £ 1,399 phone was by no means good enough.
You have to wait for how they pan out, but the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s camera system isn’t very promising. In fact, it looks exactly like its predecessor.
You are looking at the same twin 12 megapixel sensor setup. One of the main ones is also a 1 / 2.55 inch pedaling and the other is an ultra-wide 12 megapixel.
Such provisions are arguably more permissible for phones under $ 1,000 / £ 1,000. But don’t beat the bushes here. Neither of these phones can approach the camera quality of the Galaxy S21 series.
We are also considering the same 10 megapixel f / 2.4 selfie cam on both foldable cameras, but this is unlikely to set up pulse lacing.
Specifications and performance
In terms of performance, we are considering a direct upgrade across generations. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G is equipped with the fastest Android chip of the day, the Snapdragon 865, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is equipped with the fastest Android chip of the day, the Snapdragon 888.
Yes, the Snapdragon 888 Plus chips have arrived, but at the time of writing, the market is rarely swimming with these latest Qualcomm chips.
This provisioning is fast enough in both cases, as there are few apps or tasks that will grow significantly even on last year’s top processors. Still, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has obvious advantages here, especially when it comes to future warranty.
Both phones back up their power with 8GB of RAM, which is not the benefit of Samsung’s best phones. Galaxy Z Fold 3.. Still, most tasks should prove to be sufficient.
Both have 256GB of internal storage available, but this is the only option on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Interestingly, the new device also offers a lower 128GB option. Expansion with microSD is not an option on either device.
Both flips contain a 3300mAh battery, which isn’t really too big for the latest smartphone standards.
This was partially allowed on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G due to the slow 60Hz display. However, the Galazy Z Flip 3 does not have the same mitigation situation. Please paint with worry.
Especially given the fact that I wasn’t surprised at the battery performance of the Flip 5G. In our experience, it takes you from light to moderate use all day long, but more intensive use tends to drain it before bedtime.
One of Flip 3’s notable upgrades is support for faster charging. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G only went up to 15W wired and 9W wireless, but the new phone cranks things up to the better 25W wired and 11W wireless.
This isn’t what we think is still very fast given the cost of the device, but it’s competitive with the Galaxy S21 series. The same is true for support for 4.5W reverse wireless charging, which the Galaxy Z 5G does not have.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is becoming almost the same device as the previous Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G. You are looking at batteries of very similar dimensions, the same camera system, and the same size.
However, there are meaningful improvements to both displays, which are fairly fast. Perhaps most importantly, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is set to sell at a much lower price than its predecessor.
This alone makes Samsung’s entry-level foldable series a much more attractive suggestion for the average user to buy a new flagship phone. It’s no longer the expensive niche weirdness it used to be.
