Murata and Mitsubishi agree on a collaborative framework for working towards a carbon-neutral society

Mitsubishi Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Katsuya Nakanishi, hereafter “Mitsubishi”) and Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, President: Norio Nakajima, hereafter “Murata”) To work toward a carbon-neutral society Agreed on a cooperative framework for.

This framework is being developed with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality at the global level while introducing renewable energy at the enterprise level to achieve a sustainable society. The road to decarbonization is continuous, combining short-term achievable initiatives (such as building more renewable energy power plants) with longer-term goals (such as developing technologies that utilize hydrogen). It is important to maintain a stable supply at. Of renewable energy from a variety of energy sources. To that end, companies with strengths in various fields need to work together to pave the way for the next generation of energy. Start with actual testing and drive your efforts towards commercialization.

Cooperation content (4 fields)

  • Procurement of electricity from renewable energy by Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
  • Manufacture and use of hydrogen at Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Japan
  • Collaborate with local communities through the creation of autonomous and decentralized communities
  • Adjust power using batteries

With this cooperation, Murata Manufacturing has agreed to procure 70,000 kW of renewable energy from Mitsubishi by 2025, a step toward the goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2050. I took a step forward. Specific details are currently being finalized. We will continue discussions with Mitsubishi with the aim of expanding the procurement volume to 300 million kWh. This cooperation is concluded on the premise that electricity will be procured by the virtual power purchase agreement (virtual PPA) method that has just begun in Japan. We will also continue to update our medium- to long-term initiatives based on the common areas of interest of this cooperation.

Norio Nakajima, President of Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., described the framework of the cooperative as follows.

“Murata Manufacturing has a role to play in promoting the introduction of renewable energy, but from a technical point of view, it is difficult to do many of the important things in the future alone. Mitsubishi is working on social issues. As part of our efforts, we have a track record of introducing renewable energy to many locations in Japan and overseas, and we are conducting a number of businesses aimed at putting various types of energy into practical use with the know-how of Murata and Mitsubishi. By combining them, we would like to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society and the development of society as a whole. “

President Katsuya Nakanishi of Mitsubishi commented as follows.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement on a comprehensive cooperation framework with Murata Manufacturing, which is already working on low carbon / decarbonization efforts to achieve the RE100 goal. 2022. In May, we announced “Medium-Term Corporate Strategy 2024 – Creating MC Shared Value”. It facilitates growth strategies for energy transformation (EX), digital transformation (DX), and future creation (regional development / new industry generation). Unified promotion of EX and DX. Through this comprehensive cooperation, Mitsubishi and Murata will work together to create large-scale value and contribute to Japan’s low-carbon / decarbonization and regional development. “

Virtual PPA overview

Details of cooperation

Procurement from renewable energy sources
To convert all electricity consumed by the Murata Manufacturing Group’s business activities into renewable energy and achieve the goals of the RE100 Global Environment Initiative, we will procure renewable energy from a new solar power generation facility operated by Mitsubishi. increase.
The two companies have agreed to increase the scale and procurement volume of solar power generation facilities to approximately 70,000 kW by 2025, and are currently concluding a procurement contract. In the future, we aim to increase the amount of renewable energy procured to approximately 300 million kWh.
Under this agreement, the electricity obtained from the renewable energy sources supplied by Mitsubishi to Murata will be supplied by a method called virtual PPA. In this method, non-FIT non-fossil fuel energy certificates are traded directly between renewable energy providers and consumers. In addition, all power generation facilities involved in this cooperation will be built to create an additional renewable energy supply that contributes to the domestic carbon-neutral target.

Trial production and use of hydrogen

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Japan will start trial production and use of hydrogen using an electrolytic cell. By using carbon-free electricity in the electrolysis process and using the obtained hydrogen, we would like to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing.
In the future, we would like to supply hydrogen to the local community where Murata’s domestic factory is located and promote decarbonization of the region.

Community development with local communities

We aim to realize Murata’s pledge to “solve social problems in all corporate activities and contribute to society through business activities” and Mitsubishi’s “regional development by promoting the unification of EX and DX”.
In the area where Murata Manufacturing’s domestic factory is located, we are contributing to solving local social and industrial problems together with local governments under the theme of attractive, autonomous and decentralized urban development.

Adjust power using batteries

In anticipation of entering the supply and demand regulation market in collaboration with Mitsubishi, which has a proven track record in this field, we will jointly try power supply adjustment using the storage battery installed at Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
Combining the unique power control technology used at Murata’s production plants with knowledge of Mitsubishi’s power industry, we strive to resolve grid instability that can occur as renewable energy usage increases. ..
