Detroit — Cruise, general motors The robo-taxis division plans to enter “many markets” in 2023 and expand to “thousands of vehicles,” COO Gil West told Reuters.
Cruise has announced plans to begin offering rides in Austin and Phoenix, adding those cities to its current San Francisco hub. West said the company plans to expand to more cities in 2023.
“Next year, we will likely expand the number of markets significantly,” he said. Cruise believes it can accelerate the application of the technology to other cities using a “repeatable playbook” developed in San Francisco, Austin and Phoenix. This should lead to more earnings numbers containing zeros, he said.
Purpose-designed origin planned launch self-driving carsaid West, “is a big unlock” for Cruise because of its low cost.
Cruise is currently testing a human-operated Origin in San Francisco. Mass production he plans to start in 2023. Until now, Cruise has operated a limited service with a small fleet of Chevrolet Volt EVs in San Francisco.
