With four people shot dead this week alone, especially in the bloody summer of the Montreal region, the Quebec government and two major police have promised to work together and act swiftly.
Drive-by shooting at Riviere de Preah on Monday killed three men and injured two. On Thursday, a 31-year-old Longueuil man was killed in a shooting on the South Shore. Most of the victims were known to the police.
This week’s death toll led to government announcements and harsh police statements in line with the “sufficient” policy, but also raised questions about the best way to tackle the issue of gun violence.
Maria Mourani, a criminal scholar who studied street gangs in Montreal and wrote about organized crime in Quebec and around the world, says she is not surprised by the recent increase in gun violence.
Mourani says he began to notice an increase in shootings last fall, but things have escalated in recent months.
“When we’re shooting, that means there’s a conflict between different criminal groups,” she said. “The dispute over territory, drugs, unpaid debt … sometimes only two people oppose it.”
She says the ongoing war between rival gangster Riviere de Prairie’s Profit Boys and Zone 43 in Montreal Nord is causing a lot of bloodshed.
Social media accounts related to rap artists who show profit boy colors and slogans in music videos show some comments from people on both sides: Condolences to the rapper who was killed in the shoot last Monday. Some are willing, others downplay his death and promise more violence.
