2025 Volkswagen Golf R Gains More Power and Introduces Black Edition

The 2025 VW Golf R is receiving a minor update, with a notable enhancement enthusiasts will appreciate: more power. Although the increase isn’t substantial, it’s still an improvement. Along with the power boost, the model gets some light styling and feature updates, plus the introduction of a new Black Edition for those who prefer a sleeker look.

Starting with the engine, power is up from 315 horsepower to 328, while torque remains at 310 pound-feet. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system stay the same, and there’s still no manual transmission option. Additional minor changes include a loud start mode, where pressing the start button without the brake, waiting 1.5 seconds, then pressing it with the brake, revs the engine to 2,500 rpm for a more aggressive exhaust note. The Race drive mode now maintains higher turbo rpm and keeps the throttle open on overrun for better throttle and boost response.

Externally, the new Golf R features restyled headlights and taillights, a new grille, and a redesigned front bumper. The badge is now illuminated. The Black Edition adds darker trim, badges, and headlight housings, along with black-painted wheels, exhaust tips, and brake calipers. A new option is the 19-inch forged alloy wheels, each weighing 17.6 pounds.

Inside, the updates include a larger 12.9-inch infotainment screen with the new operating system from the ID models, which, while improved, isn’t universally loved. Performance-related features have been added, such as a G-meter that counts down for launches and records acceleration times, and an enhanced lap timer with GPS support for learning courses and providing split times.

The Golf R will be available for pre-sale in Europe this summer, with other markets following. Pricing details are yet to be announced but expect a slight increase from previous models.
