Caleb Ewan won the first stage of the 2021 Giro d’Italia and a total of four wins at Corsa Rosa. He jumped from behind and overhauled Italian specialists Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani. Alessandro De Marchi held Magria Rosa, but runner-up Joe Dombrowski lost time in the GC due to a crash, and one of GC’s favorites, Michellanda, also missed the race at a distance of 4km. Pavel Sivakov, who crashed earlier, also crossed the line with a considerable deficit.

At the press conference, stage winner Caleb Ewan said: The last few hundred meters were a little uphill. I went to the right and put it in the box. I moved a little to the left and had enough time at the end. I tried to get the line with as little wind as possible. The first half of the stage was very easy, but in the second half I was stressed by the possibility of crosswinds. We did a good job of staying close to the front and not getting into trouble. Winning as it is today was clearly the first goal of the three Grand Tour. It’s too early to leave Giro. I’m definitely here tomorrow and I’m trying to win more stages. “

Magria Rosa Alessandro De Marchi said: In addition to the phone message, the compliments I received today from the staff, the riders, and everyone involved with the Giro d’Italia this morning really made a lot of sense to me. Tomorrow is very easy. I will fight to the end. Be careful not to let dangerous people escape in the GC. I am ready to do my best. The Maglia Rosa is hard to wear, but given how great it is to take on these responsibilities, it’s lightweight to carry. “
